Chapter Eighteen

My former best friend Karen Cain had been in my life for over twenty years. We'd been through a lot and I thought she would be my forever friend, but something happened to her when I first started working with Simon. I'm not sure what exactly, but when I returned from Boston nearly eight months ago, she was different. Her attitude and whole outlook had changed. We had a falling out over a scene she "claims" I made at a funeral reception, and after that…well, she broke up with me.

"Karen?" I said again in the form of a question.

She looked awful. Her once healthy physique was now wasted away to skin and bone. Karen was a sturdy girl, it's how she was meant to look, but this new version was one step away from an admission to an eating disorder clinic.

What happened?

"How are you?" she said weakly, which I attributed to a lack of nutrition.

"Uh, I'm good, and you?" I said in reply.

"Oh, I'm doing amazing," she said trying to smile brightly.

God, she looked so much older now and… orange? She must have been doing the fake and bake tanning.

"This is my friend Tabitha," I said trying to remember my manners in an effort to make introductions.

Karen studied Tabitha for a moment.

"Nice to meet you," they both said.

"I see you're doing Christmas shopping," she said peering into our cart.

"Yes, and you are…" I said glancing at the lone box of protein bars in her arms.

"Oh, we're just getting our essentials," she said cheerfully.

We? Who was we? And before I knew it, my question was answered.

"Hey, Babe," a tall very muscular man said coming up from behind her.

Jasper Brant. The narcissistic personal trainer from U-Fit. Who just happened to be a serial cheater and a despicable human being. I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes in disgust.

"Natalie, I'm sure you remember Jasper," she said smiling proudly.

He was about to raise his hand in a friendly wave, but once he looked at me, he stopped himself.

"I remember you," he said.

"Hi, Jasper. You seem to being doing well and going on with your life," I said not caring to hide my dislike for the man.

"You're the psychic detective chick who questioned me about Amber," he said recalling out first meeting.

Jasper had been a suspect in the murder of Amber Lopez, a social media celebrity he had also been having an affair with. He was the ex-boyfriend of Jessica Marks, who just happened to be my ex-husband's sister-in-law. I met him because I had been hired by the one and only Carrie Marks (my ex's cheating partner) to exonerate her sister (See? I told you I lived a complex life). As for the serial cheater remark, Jasper had been cheating on both Jessica and Amber with Mara Marks…who was also Carrie and Jessica's sister, (This shit gets complicated, try to keep up). Mara just happened to be dating Zack at the time. It was Mara who had tried to kill me, (along with an unknown assist from Zack's other ex-Emma Phillips).
